How to Make Rose Water at Home

Rose water is one of the best and effective natural ingredients which is easily available. Basically, rosewater is a liquid made from rose petals and water. It’s suitable for all skin types and has no side effects. It has anti-inflammatory, pH balancing and soothing properties for the skin. Rich in powerful anti-oxidants, it protects the skin cells against damage. With pH balancing properties, rosewater helps discourage the growth of acne-causing bacteria and controls future breakouts.

The use of rose water for skin dates back to parts of the middle east, Iran and ancient Roman empire. It’s believed that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra loved to use rose water, which makes skin soft and smooth.

Rose water is an excellent toner for the skin. It can be used on its own or combined with lemon juice, aloe vera or glycerin. Combine rose water and glycerin to make a makeup setting spray. To make rose water skin toner, add aloe vera or lemon juice and use it after cleansing your face.

Pure and natural rosewater can be expensive. Rosewater is not only used for its skin benefits, but its also widely used for its flavor and aroma in cooking. You can use rosewater as a skin toner, natural perfume, makeup setting spray or add it to your bath. There are many ways to make rose water. It can be easily made from rose essential oil and dried or fresh petals.

Fresh Petal Rosewater

What you need:

One cup of fresh organic, pesticide-free roses

Distilled Water

1 tsp Vodka/Alcohol as a preservative (optional)

Spray bottle/glass jar for storage

What to do:

Remove all the petals from the roses and place in a saucepan.

Add enough water to cover all the petals and make sure all the petals are soaked. Don’t add too much water, or your rose water will be diluted and less fragrant.

Cover the pot with a lid and let the rose petals simmer on low heat for 20 minutes.

You’ll notice that the rose petals have released all the color and turned pale.

Strain the liquid and remove all petals.

Add the vodka/alcohol in the rosewater.

Store it in the fridge for up to a week without preservative. If a preservative is added, it will last a little longer.

Essential Oil Based Rosewater

What you need:

10-12 drops of pure rose essential oil

One cup distilled water

Spray bottle for storage

1 tsp Vodka/Alcohol for dilution/preservation (optional)

What to do:

First of all, dilute the rose essential oil in a teaspoon of vodka. This is important because essential oils don’t combine with water and it will just float on top of the water.

Fill the spray bottle with distilled water. Add the diluted rose essential oil. Put the lid and shake well until well combined.

Your essential oil based rose water is ready to use.
